Hippo bulls are notoriously aggressive animals and it is not uncommon for the bulls to have fatal territorial battles. So was the case of one of the young bulls in the area. The battle took place over a two night period. The first night, the younger and smaller bull tried his luck with the big, dominant bull, but was mauled badly, escaping to a small mud wallow nearby, where he rested and tried to cover his wounds with mud to keep the flies off of himself.
